Homeless Liaison:
Grundy and Kendall Counties
Sharon Schultz, Coordinator
(630) 553-4110

Education Service Network is
responsible for providing homeless
liaison services in Grundy and Kendall
Counties.
The Homeless Liaison Program
provides training and technical
assistance to all school districts in
the two counties and assists community
service providers in the implementation
of the U.S. McKinney-Vento Homeless
Education Assistance Act (part of the No
Child Left Behind Act) and the Illinois
Education for Homeless Children Act (IEHCA).
Under this legislation, homeless
children and youth have a right to:
* A free, appropriate public
education including a priority to
preschool programs (includes waiver of
required school fees that would be a
participation barrier for homeless
families
* The choice of staying in the
school of origin or attending the
school nearest their shelter or
temporary home
* Immediate enrollment even when
medical records cannot be produced at
the time of enrollment
* Assistance with transportation if
needed
The Grundy-Kendall Regional Superintendent appoints a liaison to local school districts in an effort to help eliminate barriers that may prevent homeless students from receiving immediate and full participation in educational activities and to provide public awareness regarding the issues of homelessness.
