The Attendance Assistance Program is dedicated to helping truant students stay in school, decrease daily absenteeism, decrease the number of discipline referrals, improve academic performance and increase participation in extracurricular activities.

The Attendance Assistance Program Specialists work in cooperation with Regional Offices of Education, schools, students, families, community service agencies and the criminal justice system throughout Will, Kendall and Grundy Counties to remove barriers that keep children and adolescents from attending school.

Some of the tasks performed by an Attendance Specialist can include:

  • Complete full diagnostic profile and IOEP
  • Conduct conferences with students and parents in schools
  • Identify school advocates for extra support
  • Refer families to school and community services
  • Encourage and support parental involvement
  • Support teachers and school personnel
  • Plan and implement groups for 100 youth
  • Conduct home visits
  • Provide ongoing support and monitoring
  • Review student progress quarterly
  • Refer to truant officer when necessary
  • Report data to ISBE on biannual basis
